What Counselors Do?
School counselors develop and deliver a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes positive personal, social, and emotional development for all students. Through individual counseling, small group meeting and large group presentations, school counselors help students understand their learning strengths and challenges, select appropriate courses, plan for the transition to college and career, and meet personal challenges in a mature, productive way.
Examples of student centered services include:
- Emotional, social, development and behavioral support
- Academic advising and support
- College and career awareness, exploration and planning
- School crisis intervention
- Staff development and training
- Collaboration and coordination of resources within the school and the community
When is it appropriate to contact my counselor?
STUDENTS should contact their school counselor with:
- Academic concerns
- Social/emotional problems
- Interpersonal conflicts
- Class scheduling
- Career exploration
- Post-secondary planning
PARENTS should contact their child’s school counselor with:
- Concerns regarding academic performance
- Concerns regarding social and/or emotional well-being
- Information and special needs or family situations
- Coordinating meetings with teachers and other support personnel
- College, career, and post-secondary planning
How to contact a school counselor about a student?
Every student enrolled at Rutland High School has an assigned counselor that remains them throughout the four years of high school. Counselor assignments are based on last name.
A school counselor may be contacted in the following ways:
- Student self-referral
- Teacher, administrator, or staff referral
- Parent referral
- Peer referral
