Course Descriptions

850 Duo Project .5 to 1 credit
This program consists of volunteer service of direct involvement in the problems of the community, based on a project to be developed in consultation with the student’s counselor.

860 Academic Support credit to be arranged
Designed for those students in need of support services as recommended through an Individual Educational Planning Team, 504 Team or
Instructional Support Team.  The objective of this program is to help each student meet content area obligations by teaching him/her organizational skills, time management skills, study skills utilizing techniques that meet his/her learning styles, and coping skills to deal with demands of his/her learning styles.  Goals, objectives and intervention strategies are individualized.  Grading is on a pass/fail basis.  Credit value is decided by each student’s team. Placement will be determined by teacher/team recommendation ONLY.

861 Independent Living Skills 1 credit
This course is designed to teach basic living skills.  These include meal planning, food preparation, banking, home maintenance, budgeting, social skills, leisure activities, and access to public transportation.  Real Life applications will be applied to the student’s needs. Placement will be
determined by teacher/team recommendation ONLY.

101 Fundamentals of English 1 credit
This course is designed to meet the needs of specific students in grades 10 and above who demonstrate significant weaknesses in decoding, encoding, reading comprehension, as well as writing composition. This is an alternative to the traditional English class and is based on teacher recommendation and/or decision of the student’s team. The framework for this course is the Wilson Reading System, a program designed for students who have not internalized the sound syllable system for reading and spelling. Reading instruction is combined with a literature based program for comprehension and writing proficiency. Elements of the English language such as the mechanics of writing, the skills in reading for understanding and writing for specific purpose will be addressed in the course. This course parallels STRUCTURES OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE but moves at a slower pace.

501 Fundamentals of Math 1 credit
This course is designed to meet the needs of specific students in grade 10 and above who demonstrate significant weaknesses in acquiring basic mathematic skills. This course will concentrate on the necessary life and occupational skills involving mathematics, and will include extensive use of the calculator to master skills. Placement will be determined by teacher/team recommendation ONLY.

700 Fundamentals of Science 1 credit
This course is designed to meet the needs of specific students in grade 11 and above who demonstrate weaknesses in acquiring basic science topics and in meeting graduation requirements. Areas covered are the human body, animal and plant life, and the earth and solar system. Placement will be determined by teacher/team recommendation ONLY.

800 Fundamentals of Social Studies 1 credit
This course is designed to meet the needs of specific students in grade 11 and above who demonstrate weaknesses in acquiring basic social studies topics and in meeting graduation requirements. This course is a review of human history from its beginnings to the present day and includes units on government and community service. Placement will be determined by teacher/team recommendation ONLY.
