As part of their study of American Literature, 11th graders read texts by transcendentalist writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Walt Whitman. In addition to writing analytical pieces in response to essays and poems, students are invited to compose nature journals in the spirit of Thoreau’s “Walden” and to create poems in the style of Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself” or “I Hear America Singing.” Click on the link above to read exemplary poems from this unit, each celebrating an aspect of an RHS student’s life.
