On Saturday, May 5^th, Advanced Placement French students preemptively celebrated the exam in a rite-of-passage ceremony, in which good-luck temporary henna “tattoos” were painted on the young ladies’ hands.

For centuries, Henna has adorned Mediterranean women in times of celebration, and rites of passage.

Celebrations differ from culture to culture and across time. They serve to mark or commemorate an event. They are an integral part of family and community life. Celebrations and their specific customs are part of the Family and Community theme in the Advanced Placement curriculum.

Likewise, rites of passage, too, vary from culture to culture and across time. They mark an important time in one’s life. They are celebrations that recognize the end of one phase of a person’s life and the advancement to the next. Like celebrations, rites of passage are an important component of the Advanced Placement curricular theme of Contemporary Life.

Advanced Placement French challenges the highly motivated student who has a serious interest in the French language. The course requires a high level of commitment to prepare extensively and independently for college-level course work.

The Fine Arts Department will present the annual “Evening of the Arts” on Wednesday, May 16.

This event features the efforts of the entire department:  Art, Drama and Music.  Performances begin at 6:00 p.m. and run until 9:00 p.m. in various locations around the building and art will be on display in the Information Center throughout the evening.

June 06 – Seniors get out of school at 11:15am – Senior Night/Graduation practice, 1:00 p.m., RHS Gym

June 06 – Senior Night: 6pm RHS gym-Mandatory for all Senior students. Meet at 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.

June 07 – Senior Class Breakfast – Viewing of Senior Video and Graduation Practice

8:00 a.m. – Breakfast catered in the gym and a viewing of the senior video followed by practice at the Spartan Arena (about 10 a.m.).

** Graduation tickets will be handed out at practice. Each student will receive 8 tickets**

June 07 – Graduation: 6p.m. Spartan Arena – Graduates must meet promptly at 5:15p.m. for lineup.

Caps and Gowns are $22.00 and will be distributed on Thursday, May 24th (during lunch). Seniors who do not purchase their cap and gown on May 24th may purchase them through the RHS Main Office for $24.00 after May 24th.  If a Senior doesn’t puchase them, he/she will not be included in the marching list.

Seniors with outstanding obligations to the school will not be allowed to go to any Senior functions:  Senior Ball, Class trip, graduation ceremonies etc.

Ms. O’Neil’s Winter Sports Experience is a unique gym class because the curriculum is predicated on abundant winter snow. This winter has been unique in its lack of snow. Warm temperatures and sparse precipitation have made sledding, snowshoeing, and skiing impossible. A search for other winter activities ensued, and soon we came across the Rutland Rocks Curling Club. We asked the club if they could teach our class the basics of curling and the club graciously agreed. We had an indoor seminar on curling basics, and the following week we hit the ice. Our class, assisted by a large group of Rutland Rocks volunteers, learned how to deliver rocks, sweep, and the rules of curling. We had a wonderful time sliding across the ice and chasing after rocks with our brooms. We laughed as our fellow classmates attempted some of the game’s more peculiar positions. And, we all willed our own stones across the ice and into the target. Everyone was new to curling at the beginning of the day, but by the end of our session we all realized, curling “rocks”.

In March, as part of the Sugaring Unit, students tapped trees around the school, and then collected sap and data to determine what factors impacted sap collection. They boiled the sap, wrote letters to their congressman, penned poems about sugaring, and studied the nutritional value of maple syrup. The Sugaring Unit enabled students to learn about a major Vermont tradition through a curriculum that combined Math, Science, English, Social Studies, Health, and Drama.

The Freshman Interdisciplinary Team offers students a cohesive, integrated curriculum in which they are provided with opportunities to demonstrate what they learn within real-life contexts.
