Teaching Reading Across the Curriculum
Over the past five years, Rutland City Public Schools has sharpened the focus on teaching reading at all grade levels. This year, Rutland High School teachers initiated a school-wide effort to assess students in reading. This is an interdisciplinary process, at the core of which is our school-wide reading rubric and its three indicators: word knowledge, basic understanding of text, and analysis & interpretation. Our objective is to facilitate student learning by reinforcing these skills in multiple disciplines.
Teachers will record four sets of scores throughout the semester, each time reporting out on all three indicators on the reading rubric. The final set will be summative, a representation of the student’s final status at semester’s end.
As teachers record them, your student’s scores will be visible in Infinite Campus when you log on. You will be able to track your student’s progress on the same reading skills across disciplines. This data will enable teachers to provide specific feedback to students, and to adjust instruction and assessment practices based on student need.
You can access a copy of the RHS Reading Rubric on the Rutland High School website.
