Classroom Spotlight: Civics and Economics
On the Wednesday before April Break, Public Service Commissioner David O’Brien was a guest speaker in Ms. Kravitz’s Civics and Economics class. Commissioner O’Brien explained the role of the Public Service Department within the Vermont government and as an advocate for Vermonters. Students asked many thoughtful questions about the closing of Vermont Yankee, and alternative energy sources for power. From Commissioner O’Brien’s responses, students recognized the benefits and challenges presented by all energy sources – from nuclear, to hydro, solar, and wind. Students also learned a great deal about the way energy is distributed, and energy contracts are realized. In addition to energy, students were curious about the Smart Grid program considered by the legislature and the possibility of cell phone access throughout Vermont. Throughout the block, Commissioner O’Brien explained his department’s agenda and hope for the future in energy and telecommunication areas. The students all learned a great deal more about an important department within Vermont’s executive branch.
